Primary 1 - Early Level Numeracy
Online Numeracy Lessons for Primary 1 Students in Scotland
Primary One numeracy and mathematics lessons start with number recognition and formation, beginning with the numbers 0, 1 and 2. Pupils learn to spot the numbers 0, 1 and 2 when they see them, to count and write to 0, 1 and 2.
The lessons then move onto learning the numbers 3, 4 and 5. They learn to spot the number 3, 4 and 5 when they see them, to count and write to 3, 4 and 5 as well as write these numbers. We teach the numbers 6, 7 and 8 and our pupils learn to spot the numbers 6, 7 and 8 when they see them, to count to 6, 7 and 8 and to write the numbers 6, 7 and 8. They learn to recognise the numbers 9 and 10 and spot the numbers 9 and 10 when they see them. They learn to count to 9 and 10 and write the numbers 9 and 10.
Our number recognition and counting lessons begin as we teach how to count to 5. Our pupils learn to count up to 5 things and to write the numbers 0 to 5. We teach how to count up to 10 things and our pupils learn to count up to 10 things and to write the numbers 0 to 10 to show their answers. Our addition to 5 lessons teach how to add two numbers together up to 5. Pupils learn to add two numbers up to 5 and to write and an additional sum. They learn to use materials, their fingers and a number line to add up.
We teach our pupils to add two numbers together up to 10. They learn to add two numbers together up to 10. They learn to write and answer an addition sum and use materials, their fingers and a number line to add up. They learn to subtract a small number from a bigger number, within 10. They learn to subtract two numbers from each other. They will be able to write and answer a subtraction sum. They can use materials, fingers and a number line to take away and understand that subtract means take away.
Recognition and counting to 13 teaches our pupils to be able to recognise the numbers 11 to 13 and to correctly count items up to 13. Recognition and counting 14 to 16 teaches how to recognise the numbers 14 to 16, to be able to write the numbers 14 to 16 and correctly count items up to 16. Recognition 17 to 20 teaches how to recognise the numbers 17 to 20, to be able to write the numbers 17 to 29 and to correctly count items up to 20. Our number order within 10 lesson teaches how to order numbers within 10. Pupils learn to order numbers within 10, to find the number before and after a number and to identify the missing number in a number line to 10.
Coin recognition and counting to 10p teaches how to recognise 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins. Pupils learn to spot 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins when they see them. They learn to make 10p with different coins, count coins up to 10p and choose the correct coins to buy things up to 10p.
